Joanne Ferguson, 83, Longtime Greenwich Volunteer

GREENWICH, Conn. – Joanne Ferguson, a resident of Greenwich since 1962, died Sunday, Jan. 13. She was 83.

The daughter of Joseph and Anna Besch, she was born April 21, 1929, in Albany, N.Y. She graduated from Albany Academy for Girls and attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y.

After college, Ferguson worked as an elementary school teacher in Albany. She later moved to New York City to work with a food and fashion photographer.

She married Wright Ferguson on Oct. 20, 1956, in Albany. In 1962, they moved to Greenwich with their three young children. She was an active volunteer in numerous charities in the Greenwich area.

A member of Christ Church in Greenwich, Ferguson served on the altar guild for many years, was a receptionist in the church office for 25 years and also worked in the bookstore.

She volunteered at Community Centers Inc. and worked at the soup kitchen at St. Luke's in Stamford. She was also a member of the Junior League of Greenwich.

The family joined Belle Haven Club in 1964 and was involved in activities and events, particularly when her husband was commodore in 1977.

Ferguson is survived by her husband; her twin daughters Annie and Wendy; her son, Wright (Kinsey) Ferguson Jr.; a sister, Betty Ann Solinger, of New York City; and three granddaughters.

A wake will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Greenwich. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Church.
