Jerry Jacob, 79, Greenwich Airline Executive

GREENWICH, Conn. – Jerry Rowland Jacob of Greenwich, a retired airline executive, died Sept. 13 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 79.

Born Aug. 8, 1933, in Chicago, he was the son of Claude W. and Morris Rowland Jacob. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1956 and attended SMU Law School. He worked for American Airlines for 37 years, starting out as a reservations agent in 1957.

Jacob later became the youngest vice president of American Airlines at the age of 34. He retired as vice president of the eastern division of American Airlines in 1994. He later became chairman of Midway Airlines and served on the boards of the New York Police Athletic League and Heart Care International.

Jacob was a fly fisherman much of his life and a member of the Sandhill River Salmon Club. He was also a member of the Sky Club and the Wings Club in New York City and was an avid Yankees fan.

Jacob is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Powell Jacob; three children, Ellen Jacob (Bill) Wraith, Susan Jacob (John "Jack") Soccorso, and Bill (Sholpan) Jacob; a brother Robert "Bob" (Mim) Jacob; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Second Congregational Church of Greenwich. Memorial contributions may be made to Heart Care International , 139 E. Putnam Ave., Greenwich, CT 06830.
