Jean Walker, 87, Of Greenwich, Writer And Editor

GREENWICH, Conn. – Jean Marie Walker, 87, of Greenwich, died on Friday, March 20.

She was born on Nov. 24, 1927, in Chicago.

Walker was editor of the Greenwich Junior League's Link magazine for many years. She wrote many poems and award-winning essays.

She earned a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. It was while working as the editor of the University's literary magazine "The Showme" that she met her future husband, Mort Walker, creator of the "Beetle Bailey" comic strip. After the comic strip became a hit, they moved to Greenwich, and he created another successful comic strip based on their family life called "Hi and Lois."  They divorced in 1983.

She was a member of the Julian Curtiss Elementary School PTA for 25 consecutive years. She also served as a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout troop leader.

She was involved in many other clubs and social organizations, including The Junior League, The Greenwich Women's Club, The Greenwich Garden Club, Belle Haven and Millbrook Clubs, The English Speaking Union, The Wild Geese Society, and The Audubon Society.

Walker became a successful property investor in her later years.

Survivors include her seven children, Roger (Katie), Neal (Kristin), Brian (Abby), Greg, Morgan, Margie Hauer, and Polly (Rich) Blackstock; and 13 grandchildren.  

Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m., Friday, at the Leo Gallagher Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Michael's Church, 469 North St., Greenwich.

Internment will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery, 399 North St., Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Audubon Society of Greenwich, 613 Riversville Road, Greenwich, CT 06831.
