James F. Gleason Jr., 79, Retired Greenwich Police Captain

GREENWICH, Conn. - James Francis Gleason Jr. of Greenwich died Nov. 11. He was 79.

Gleason was born June 23, 1934, to James Francis Sr. and Mary Frances Gleason. He attended St. Mary Grammar School and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1952.

After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the battleship USS Wisconsin during the Korean War and then the submarine USS Croaker based in Groton.

He then went on to become a police officer for the town of Greenwich. He retired from the force after 37 years and eight months with the rank of captain. He was a retired member of the Police Association of Connecticut, United States Submarine Veterans Holland Club, Life member United States Submarine Veterans, USS Wisconsin Association, VFW Post 1792, and the Greenwich Boat and Yacht Club.

Gleason is survived by his wife, Barbara Riith Gleason; sister, Virginia M. Reynolds of Greenwich; brother, Kenneth J. Gleason (Donna) of Islamora, Fla.; several nieces, nephews; grandnieces, grandnephews; sisters and brothers-in- law, Frances (Robert) Mathieson, Robert  (Patricia) Riith, Karen (Donald) Landers, Kathleen Duffy; and lifelong friends, Dominick and Evelyn Frano. He was predeceased by his parents.

Calling hours are Thursday, Nov. 14, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Castiglione Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at St. Timothy Chapel. Entombment will follow the service in St. Mary Cemetery.
