Herbert M.. Johnson, 78, Longtime Resident Of Greenwich, Retired Publisher

GREENWICH, Conn. - Herbert M. Johnson of Greenwich died Tuesday Nov. 25. He was 78.

Johnson was born March 19, 1936, in Leipzig, Germany, to Walter and Thekla Johnson. The family immigrated to the United States in the early 1940's. He graduated from Duke University in 1956. He then joined his father's academic publishing business. He built and sold a number of businesses prior to starting JAI Press in 1972 until it was acquired in 1998 by Reed Elsevier. He retired from publishing, and began a post retirement career in commercial real estate in which his son, George, has been his partner.

As a longtime resident of Greenwich, he and his wife, Susan were philanthropic both locally and nationally. He was a supporter of Duke University and has been a staple in a number of non-profit organizations in Greenwich including: United Way, Kids in Crisis, Boy's & Girls Club, Arch Street, The Greenwich Teen Center and Greenwich Police Department, starting the flag football program.

Johnson is survived by his sister, Marjorie Hewett (Simon) of New York; wife, Dawn Johnson of Greenwich; children, Water J. Johnson of Stamford, Matthew G. Johnson (Jolie) of Greenwich, Michael Johnson (Virginia) of Old Greenwich, Miranda Garside (John) of Kalamazoo, Mich., and George F. Johnson (Shasta) of Charlotte, N.C.; 15 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Susan A. Johnson; and sister, Marianne Cruickshank of New York.

The family will be having a service at 2 p.m. Dec. 21 at the Second Congregational Church in Greenwich.
