Helen Simpson, 90, Former Greenwich Volunteer

STAMFORD, Conn. – Helen R. Simpson of Stamford and formerly of Old Greenwich died Jan. 4 at Stamford Hospital. She was 90.

Simpson was born June 13, 1922, in Philadelphia to James and Emily Rippey. She grew up in New Haven and graduated from Connecticut College for Women in 1944. Simpson then joined IBM Corp. in New York City.

A 47-year resident of Old Greenwich, she moved to Edgehill Retirement Community in 1999 and served on the Residents Council as treasurer. Simpson volunteered with the Greenwich Library on the Oral History Project and served on the Board of Trustees of Brunswick School.

Simpson coordinated blood drives for the Greenwich chapter of the American Red Cross, where she was awarded the Clara Barton Award in 1990. She was also a longtime member of Riverside Yacht Club.

She was married for 42 years to George H. Simpson, who died in 1988. She is survived by three sons, George H. (Brenda) Simpson Jr. of Tampa, Fla., James R. (Lynn) Simpson, of Stamford, and Peter S. (Ann) Simpson, of Riverside; and five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. A sister, Susan Polleys, died in 2012.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich. Burial will be private. Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Greenwich is handling arrangements.
