Harold Calvin Smith, 87, Former Greenwich Resident

ROWAYTON, Conn. - Harold Calvin Smith, known as Hal, of Rowayton, formerly of Stamford, Ridgefield and Greenwich, died Monday, June 16. He was 87.

Smith was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, to Ulysses and Rita Smith. He was the youngest of six siblings, Carl, Charles, Alice, Margaret, and Dorothy. After living in Missouri for the first three years of his life, his family moved to Charleston, S.C. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy as a second class petty officer on the USS Hill destroyer, and the USS Matagorda seaplane tender, between 1942 and 1946. After his service in the Navy, he worked for Pitney Bowes in Stamford for 36 years, retiring as a superintendent in 1988. During his time at Pitney Bowes, he lived in Stamford, Ridgefield, and Greenwich. Eventually, he settled down in Rowayton. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, St. John's Catholic Church in Darien, and the American Legion.

Smith is survived by his wife, Yolanda Smith of Rowayton; children, Kathy (Mike) Pasquarella of Darien, Dave Smith of Greenwich, and Matt (Tara) Smith of Darien; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19 at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home at 2900 Summer St., in Stamford, Connecticut. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20 at St. John's Church at 1986 Boston Post Road, Darien. Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
