SALISBURY, Conn. - Garth E. Kauffman of Salisbury, formerly of Greenwich, died May 27. He was 92.
Kauffman was born May 4, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pa., and was the son of Violet Melbourne and Harold Kauffman. Following graduation from St. Lawrence University in 1943, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, he served in World War II as an LCT officer in the Anzio and Southern France invasions and as a gunnery officer on the USS Enterprise in the Pacific. After Harvard Business School, class of 1949, he began a 30-year career in advertising, retiring from Young & Rubicam in New York as a vice president. He then became director of development at the Greenwich Academy where he had been president of the Board of Trustees. He also was a former trustee of St. Lawrence University and president of its Alumni Association.
He was a former member of The University Club in New York, The Stanwich Country Club and The Field Club of Greenwich, and The Sharon Country Club in Sharon. He and his wife attended The Stanwich Congregational Church.
Kauffman is survived by his daughters, Tracy Kauffman (Daniel) Agro of Greenwich and Christy (Pastor Alan) Valentine of Mbale, Uganda; seven grandchildren; and a nephew and four nieces. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara "Bobby/Bobo" Banks.
