Dernier was born to state Senator Floyd E. Barbour and Florence Clock Barbour. She was a graduate of Greenwich High School. She attended Finch College, and later in life became a member of their Board of Directors. She also attended the University of Vermont and Yale University Engineering Institute.
She was a founding member of Connecticut Playmakers, and the Old Greenwich Cotillion. A member of the Wainwright House, and the Putnam Hill Chapter of the DAR, the Greenwich Riding Association and the YWCA. As a member of the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, she sang in the choir and served on the board of directors of the Dingle Town Community Church. A creative writer, she was active in the Oral History Project, wrote several short stories, and was in the process of completing her autobiography covering her life in Greenwich from 1914 to the present.
Dernier is survived by her son, Paul Dwight Dernier; daughter, Suzanne de Les Derniers; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Dwight Maynard Dernier; daughter, Nannette Dernier Cucuel; brother, George F. Barbour; and sisters, Alberta Barbour, Marjorie B. Reeves, Jane Hansen Schneider.
A private burial is planned. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dernier’s name to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America or the Masonicare Charity of CT.
