Dr. Johanna Ruzzier Haig, 88, Greenwich Resident

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Dr. Johanna Ruzzier Haig of Greenwich passed on Aug. 14.

She valued faith and family above all else, and always took great care to help her children and grandchildren. Born on December 11, 1926, the daughter of Frederick Anton Ruzzier and Theresa Van Dow, Johanna was fiercely proud to be a native New Yorker.

An amazing intellect, she graduated from Julia Richmond High School and Hunter College at the ages of 13 and 16, respectively. She then went on to New York Medical College, a rarity for a woman in those days, becoming a Medical Doctor and practicing anesthesiology. Her combination of beauty and brilliance intimidated most young men of her age, but did not deter young Dr. Armen Charles Haig, an enterprising orthopedic surgeon who worked alongside her in New York's St. Luke's Hospital. Johanna and Armen were married on March 2, 1957 and together raised 5 children: Scott Haig, Hilary Haig Holowink, Clyde Haig, Wayne Haig and Amy-Dame Haig Wagner.

Johanna took tremendous pride in all of her children and created a warm and loving home for them even while pursuing a distinguished medical career at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, N.Y. Johanna was always full of life and helped fill the lives of those around her with love and vitality.

"Nothing does like doing" Johanna would often say, a positive expression of the irrepressible can-do attitude she carried with her throughout her entire life. Johanna is survived by her loving husband Armen as well as their 5 children, 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Emily Haig. Johanna herself would always say to us, "God be with you", and we are blessed that she is now with Him.
