Breaking News: Greenwich Schools Superintendent Unexpectedly Announces Departure

Anne Pitaro, 85, Retired Teacher From Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. – Anne J. Pitaro of Greenwich and formerly of Stamford died Feb. 8 from complications of lymphoma. She was 85.

Pitaro was born Jan. 6, 1928, in Ozone Park, N.Y., the eldest of six children of Carmela Montefusco and Rosario LoBaido. She graduated from Nativity BVM School, Bishop McDonnell High School and Hunter College.

She received a master's degree in education from Fordham University in 1976 and worked in Brooklyn Catholic schools for 29 years as a teacher. She also served as a principal at St. Elizabeth in Ozone Park.

Pitaro was married to former New York State Supreme Court Justice Nicholas L. Pitaro for 61 years. They were longtime residents of Ozone Park and active in numerous church and community organizations.

She served as the Queens Commissioner of the Girl Scouts. Prior to living in Greenwich, they lived in Stamford for 15 years.

Pitaro is survived by five children, Edmund (Coleen Kiel), Angela, Regina (Mario Gabelli), Nicholas and Gregory (Penelope Christophorou); and eight grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday at Nativity BVM Church in Ozone Park. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the scholarship fund of Futures in Education of the Diocese of Brooklyn, 310 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, NY 11215.
