Woman Involved In Connecticut Sex Trafficking Case Sentenced To 5 Years

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- A woman involved in a sex trafficking ring that lured young girls to the area from out-of-state and would then make them work as prostitutes in Milford, has been sentenced to five years in prison followed by six years of supervised release, according to Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

U.S. Attorney for Connecticut Deirde Daly said a New York woman had been sentenced to five years in prison for being part of a sex trafficking ring.

Kayla Walters, 24, of New York, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Robert N. Chatigny in Hartford for conspiring to commit sex trafficking of minors, Daly said.

According to court documents and statements made in court, the sex trafficking first took place in 2012 when Walters and Edward Thomas, a New York-based pimp also known as "Fire," answered an internet prostitution ad from a 17-year-old girl in Oregon. Thomas encouraged the girl to travel to New York with tickets he purchased. The young girl did so, along with one of her friends who was 16 at the time, officials said.

When they arrived in New York, Thomas told them they would be prostituting for him in Connecticut under the supervision of Walters, according to court documents. He then drove the two girls to Milford to deliver them to Walters. The younger girl was able to escape out of a motel room window after several hours, Daly said. The other girl was kept working for a month while the couple kept all of her money. When she attempted to leave, Thomas would forcibly restrain her, court documents said.

The girl was rescued by FBI agents with the help of local law enforcement from Milford and Stratford.

According to court documents, Thomas recruited the girl a second time in 2013, and again took her to work as a prostitute in Connecticut. She was once again rescued by the FBI and local police. Thomas and Walters were arrested and have been detained since their arrests on Feb. 28, 2014.

Thomas was sentenced earlier this year to 17 and half years in prison after a jury found him guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor and two counts of sex trafficking of a minor.
