FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – There might be a white Christmas after all.

The National Weather Service is forecasting snow is on the way for Fairfield County.

Along the coast, there is likely to be more of a winter mix of rain and snow falling starting Monday night with about 1 inch of snow accumulation, the agency said.

North of the Merritt Parkway, a greater snow fall is forecast for Monday night, between 1-2 inches.

On Christmas Day, snow is forecast for the early morning for the entire area before switching to rain closer to midday.

A major snow storm in the middle of the country could contribute to the snow we’ll see come Christmas, Accuweather.com said, even though 2012 is likely to end as the warmest year since 1950.

There also is a possibility of another major storm, either snow or thunderstorm, coming to the area in the latter part of the week.
