"One of the attacks was near me, but all of my Marist colleagues and I are safe," Molly Elliot, a Newtown native, said in the on-air interview.
She is studying abroad as part of a group from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Reports late Friday indicated over 100 people had been killed in separate terror attacks.
"Reading the reports, they sound pretty scary," she said.
Elliot and her fellow students live close to the scene of one of the the shootings.
"It's 10 to 15 minutes away walking ... it's very near me," she said. "It's a charming area, It's hard to envision it in such chaos."
Elliot described it as a typically a busy area, filled with people going to restaurants and nightclubs,
She said Marist officials are making sure the students are all staying inside and keeping them informed about the situation.
"It's unsettling," she said. "I hope that everyone I know is safe."
