Water Main Repairs To Back Up Traffic in Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. — Expect 28 more days of traffic tie-ups in Glenville as the Aquarion Water Co. works on a more permanent fix for a water main that has broken twice in the past month.

About 500 feet of iron pipe from Riversville Road and Glenville Road up to Glenville School will be replaced. Expect alternating one-way traffic for the next month while the nearly 80-year-old pipes are replaced. Work will be done from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The plan was created after the water company vowed to prevent water main breaks after the two. The first break occurred July 28, sending a geyser of water up through buckled pavement and making the area nearly impassable for a day. On Aug. 6, a second break again disrupted traffic and shut down waterpower to area residents and businesses.

Lorraine Bukowski, public relations manager for Aquarion, said after the original break that the intersection had to be excavated to replace the broken portion of the pipe and then returned to its original condition.

“Whenever a company does that kind of work, there’s a period of a couple of months for the ground to settle,” said Bukowski. “They think that the earth began to settle and broke a portion of the main farther down from where the original one was.”

Company officials made the 29-day plan with First Selectman Peter Tesei, public works commissioner Amy Siebert, and other town representatives. The company promised no water service would be upset during the transition.
