FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — A spy ship was spotted off the Connecticut coast, a Brookfield woman died in a skiing accident, a tree fell on a car on the Merritt Parkway in Greenwich during a wind storm, and a teen was charged with shooting a pizza delivery man's car and shooting him — those are some of the week's stop stories in Fairfield County.

The Merritt Parkway was closed for a few hours Monday during a windstorm after a tree smashed onto a car and scattered limbs and debris across the roadway. 

A 46-year-old woman from Brookfield died from injuries suffered in a skiing collision at Mohawk Mountain Ski Area in Cornwall last weekend, state police said. 

Liz Milwe and Peter Wormser are working to build a community center and kitchen classroom at Wakeman Town Farm in Westport that will be named after their son, Tim Wormser, who died last year at the age of 27.

A school bus nearly slid off the road at an icy intersection in backcountry Greenwich on Monday morning at Taconic Road at North Street.

A 15-year-old girl from Bridgeport was charged with stealing a car from a pizza deliveryman in Stamford and leading police on a pursuit on I-95 before crashing in Darien, police said.

As part of “A Day Without Immigrants,” a national strike in response to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, dozens of business owners in downtown Danbury closed their doors Thursday. The goal is to show how vital immigrants are to the economy and the communities in which they live.

The proprietor of a Newtown liquor store set his own business on fire and vandalized the building with swastikas, police said. Scott Young, 39, of Southington was charged with first-degree arson and insurance fraud, among other charges, in the incident last month, police said.

The Fairfield Metro train station has no amenities and no bathrooms — but that all could change. Six food truck merchants showed up to hear more about the state’s proposal to allow vendors to operate in the parking lot beginning this spring. “I think it would be great,” said Aaron Hagel of Best Food Fast, which serves up a full line of goodies in spots across Bridgeport. “The demand is here.”

A group led by Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff gathered outside Jefferson Elementary to explain “Fix It First" — a new proposal to modernize Norwalk’s public schools. The plan proposes improving and modernizing all of the existing school buildings — before any new schools are built to deal with the district's growing enrollment.

Gary Mayone, 51, of Danbury who was busted on noise charges twice in one night made the situation far worse by threatening to "get an assault rifle and shoot up the Danbury Police Department," police said. He now faces charges of terrorism, police said.

A teenage suspect in two robberies of Norwalk food delivery drivers — including one who was shot and wounded — was arrested when he appeared in Bridgeport Superior Court, Police said. Tyriek Gantt, 19, of Norwalk, was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of first-degree conspiracy to commit robbery, first-degree assault and second-degree larceny, police said.

Hope is a big word in the Standen household in Easton these days. Through a procedure at the Cell Medicine Institute in Panama, there is a 60 percent to 70 percent chance that Zach Standen — a 17-year-old who became paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident last summer — may regain some feeling and movement in his legs. Two men in a van filled with tanks of hundreds of galloons of used cooking oil were arrested on larceny charges last weekend when they were spotted acting suspiciously outside a Japanese restaurant in Fairfield, police said. 

Officers seized a "tremendous amount of weaponry," including guns, knives and improvised explosive devices when they busted Alexander S. Braverman, 24, at the North Stamford home he shared with his parents, police said. In addition to weapons charges, Braverman was also charged with operating a drug factory in the home, where he was cultivating marijuana plants, police said.

A moped driver who was hit by a car in Stratford late Friday was hospitalized in critical condition, police said.
