Towns, Cities In Fairfield County Mark 15th Anniversary Of Terror Attacks

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — As has been the custom since the deadly terror attacks in 2001, a host of Fairfield County communities will honor Sept. 11 in their own ways.

A statewide ceremony was held Thursday night at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport to honor all the victims who had ties to Connecticut .

Events continue Sunday, which is the 15th anniversary of the attacks.

Sunday, Sept. 11

Countywide : CT United Ride, Connecticut’s largest annual 9/11 tribute, is 60-mile motorcycle motorcade that winds through 11 area towns to pay tribute to the victims and first responders of the terrorist attacks. The ride starts at Norden Park in Norwalk at 11:30 a.m. and travels through Westport, Wilton, Georgetown, Redding, Bethel, Newtown, Monroe, Trumbull, and Fairfield before ending at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. Diocese of Bridgeport : A Blue Mass honoring first responders will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas, 1719 Post Road, Fairfield.

Bethel : A ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the Municipal Center. It will be moved indoors in the event of rain.

Darien: The Monuments and Ceremonies Commission will hold a remembrance ceremony at Middlesex Middle School at 8:30 a.m.

Fairfield: First Selectman Michael Tetreau, Fire Chief Denis McCarthy and Police Chief Gary MacNamara will host a remembrance ceremony at 8 a.m. at the Fire Headquarters, 140 Reef Road.

Greenwich: A memorial ceremony will be held in Cos Cob Park at 5 p.m.

New Fairfield : The 102nd Army Band will play a free concert before the 9/11 remembrance ceremony in the parking lot above the New Fairfield Senior Center. The concert starts at 6 p.m. and the ceremony at 7 p.m.

Newtown : The annual memorial will be held at flag tree memorial at the home of Howard Lasher at 68 Dodgingtown Road at 8 a.m.

Redding: At "The Art of Remembrance," Redding’s Charles Moretz, an artist and designer whose photographs were commissioned and permanently installed in Windows on the World, will share his connection to the World Trade Center and his plan to honor the iconic buildings. The event will be at 3 p.m. at the Mark Twain Library. Sign up online or by calling 203 938-2545. Also, a commemorative ceremony will take place at Town Hall beginning at 8:30 a.m. for those who wish to view photos taken on and around 9/11. A bell-ringing ceremony will take place in the gazebo at 9 a.m. The CT United Ride will start to pass by at about 11:30 a.m.

Ridgefield : A ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Sept. 11 Memorial monument at 195 Danbury Road.

Shelton: The Shelton Volunteer Fire Company No. 4 in Pine Rock Park will hold a memorial service at 8:30 a.m. After the service, the firehouse will be hosting an open house and refreshments for all those who attend. Also, the SportsCenter in Shelton will host Heroes Day, offering military, police, fire and first responders and their families use of the facility. Activities include mini-golf, bowling, batting cages, golf range, ice skating (from 1 to 3 p.m.), GameZone and target paintball. For more information, visit the website .

Stamford : A ceremony will be held at the Woodside Fire Station at 1620 Washington Blvd. at 7 p.m.

Stratford: The Stratford Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9460 will host a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. at its headquarters at 100 Veterans Blvd., just off Barnum Avenue Cutoff.

Weston : A memorial service will be held at Town Hall at 8:30 a.m.

Wilton : Firefighters will hold a remembrance ceremony at the Wilton Fire Department at 10 a.m.

Monday, Sept. 12

New Canaan : Grace Farm and Voices of Sept. 11 will hold an event focused on remembrance, renewal and resilience at Grace Farms beginning at 9 a.m. Click here for more information.

Redding : The Peter Burton Henson Award For Humanities will be presented in a ceremony at 9 a.m. at Joel Barlow High School. Easton First Selectman Adam Dunsby will be attending. Henson, an Easton native, was killed on Sept. 11, 2001, with his wife and 2-year-old daughter, the youngest victim of 9/11.

Also, a number of memorial services have already been held this year, including in Danbury , New Canaan and Norwalk .
