Tornado Strikes Upstate Connecticut, Destroys Sports Dome

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The area along the Merritt Parkway from New Canaan into Norwalk was under a tornado warning Monday. But the real thing hit Windsor Locks later in the day, the National Weather Service said.

A tornado was confirmed to hit the area near Windsor Locks at about 1:28 p.m. July 1, the weather service said. The storm also destroyed a sports dome facility in East Windsor. 

The estimated wind speed was 90 mph. It had a path about 200 yards wide and about 2.25 miles long.  

No fatalities or injuries were reported in the storm. The information was preliminary, the weather service said. 

The tornado began on Hayden Station Road in Windsor Locks, where a roof was blow off a warehouse, and continued across the Connecticut River, ending in the 200 block of Main Street in East Windsor, the weather service said.

Numerous trees were downed near Raymond Road and Alicia Terrace in Windsor Locks, including some onto houses and cars, the weather service said. Shingles were blown off houses on Preston Road and Gaylord Road. As the tornado traveled northward, tobacco tents were ripped off tobacco fields and some tobacco was flattened.  

Several eyewitnesses reported debris lofted into the air and the sound of a freight train as the tornado roared through the area. 

A sports bubble at Sports World In East Windsor collapsed and blew onto I-91, the weather service said. A semi-truck was blown over on I-91 south at Exit 44 in East Windsor, it said.
