Troopers were focusing on aggressive/reckless drivers, distracted drivers, speeders, seatbelt violations and intoxicated drivers. Sobriety checkpoints and targeted DUI patrols are also in place over the entire long weekend.
These statistics cover from 12:01a.m. July 1 to 11 a.m. July 4:
- Total accidents: 275 (up from 170 total in 2015)
- Accidents with injuries: 36 (down from 48)
- Fatalities: 2 (I-95 in East Haven on July 2 and I-95 in Westbrook on July 3) (Compared with two in 2015.)
- DUI arrests: 36 (compared with 33 last year.)
- Speeding citations: 1,013 (compared with 859 last year)
- Other hazardous moving violation tickets: 2,473 (compared with 2,461 last year)
In the fatal accidents, a 68-year-old Trumbull woman was killed in a six-vehicle pileup Saturday morning on I-95 in East Haven. Five people had to be extricated from the most heavily damaged vehicle, including the Trumbull woman, who was a back-seat passenger. The crash also involved at least one tractor-trailer.
In the other fatal accident, a 20-year-old Westbrook man was struck and killed while walking on I-95 early Sunday between Exits 65 and 66 in Westbrook, according to the Hartford Courant.
The death of a 56-year-old Bridgeport man who was run over by a tractor-trailer on Saturday on Wordin Street has been ruled a homicide and is not included in the state police tally.
During the state police enforcement operation, troopers are using both traditional and nontraditional patrol cars.
The enforcement project started at 12:01 a.m. July 1 and will run through 11:59 p.m. July 4.
