Sophie Brabender, Lifelong Greenwich Resident

GREENWICH, Conn. – Sophie Brabender, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, died Monday. She was 88 years old.

Brabender was born on Oct. 26, 1923, to John and Nellie Kosek. She worked for as a waitress at Ces't Bons, Manero's and Luca's. She was a founding member of the 9th District Veterans Association Women's Auxiliary and was crowned "Miss Greenwich" in the early 1940s.

Brabender is survived by her daughter Cheryl and husband Jim Clifford; daughter Joan D. Piro; daughter Jackie and husband John Bucca; and five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Her husband, John "Jack" Brabender, died in 1987.

Family and friends may call at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich, on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services and burial are private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the American Lung Association of Connecticut, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108-3272.
