Snow Won't Taper Off Until After Monday Evening Rush Hour In Greenwich

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- A daylong storm will begin to taper off Monday evening across Fairfield County, leaving a half-foot of snow and sloppy roads for the afternoon commute, the National Weather Service said.

Afternoon radar showed moderate accumulations continuing with lighter snowfall heading to southwestern Connecticut by late afternoon and evening, the weather service said.

Despite the slightly improving conditions, most roads will remain snow covered and slippery into the overnight, the weather service warned.

The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday. Snow was falling mid-day across Northern New Jersey, New York City, Long Island and the Hudson River Valley, as well as most of Connecticut.

Temperatures were holding steady in the upper 20s to the low 30s across the state as the snow continued. Total snowfall by mid-afternoon ranged from an inch in northern Connecticut up to 5 inches along the Fairfield County coastline, according to the state’s Emergency Operations Center.

"The major highways are currently wet and slushy for the most part," the state said in a statement. "Many secondary roads are snow and slush covered at this time."

The impact on the afternoon rush hour is expected to be minor in most places, the state said, with a moderate impact possible on the secondary roads of southern Connecticut.

Total snowfall is forecast to range from 4 to  7 inches along the coast and less inland. "Accumulations should generally be greater on grassy surfaces and a little less on roads where some melting continues to occur,” the state said.

Better clean up this snow quickly. The next storm is expected to hit late Tuesday, with a Winter Storm Watch in effect from midnight to 6 p.m. Wednesday across southwestern Connecticut.

Heavy snow totaling 5 to 10 inches and up to a half-inch of ice buildup is forecast for Wednesday.

The snow will develop Tuesday then mix with and change to sleet and freezing rain. The periods of snow, sleet and freezing rain will make for treacherous travel from late Tuesday into late Wednesday.

And if you're making weekend plans, beware: There is a chance of snow, perhaps heavy, in the forecast for Saturday.
