The town of Greenwich received an unexpected donation of $250,000 from overflow funds for the newly renovated September 11 memorial on Great Captain's Island, First Selectman Peter Tesei announced Thursday.
The memorial project was finished in time for the ninth anniversary ceremony in September, but there were extra funds never used for the project. Thanks to the foundation, Greenwich Chamber of Commerce President Mary Ann Morrison presented a check for a quarter of a million dollars this week to Greenwich.
Ben Fisher, a town resident who died in the World Trade Center attacks, was a founding member of Return the Light, a foundation established to renovate the lighthouse on Great Captain's Island. After his death, Fisher's family requested that memorial gifts be made in his name to fund a memorial in Greenwich. The founders of Return the Light (which changed its name to Let There Be Lights) requested the lighthouse project become the town's memorial to the 12 residents and 13 other victims with ties to the town that died in the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
