GREENWICH, Conn. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has received more campaign donations to date from Greenwich residents than any other Republican candidate or President Barack Obama, according to numbers released by the Center for Responsive Politics.
Romney has received a total of $459,950 in 277 reported donations from Greenwich residents, according to OpenSecrets.org, a project of the Center for Responsive Politics. The research group, based in Washington, D.C., is tracking money in U.S. politics.
Greenwich residents had donated $3,191,364 to candidates in the 2012 election as of Feb. 21. In the 2008 presidential election, Greenwich residents donated $6,753,431. These figures do not include funds donated by Political Action Committees, which are established mostly by businesses or groups of individuals and allow large donations to be made.
Individuals are permitted to give $2,500 to a candidate for the primary season and another $2,500 for the general election.
Some notable residents who contributed the maximum of $2,500 toward Romneys campaign include YES network executive John Filippelli, Nestle Waters CEO Kim Jeffery, Priceline.com President Jeffery Boyd and General Atlantic's managing director Rene Kern.
Newt Gingrich has received a total of $14,500 from Greenwich residents, with maximum donations from Lewis E. Lehrman, senior partner with L.E. Lehrman & Co., and Christopher Altschul of Jeffries & Co.
Rick Santorum has received $2,750 in contributions so far, with the majority from John C. Sites of Wesford Capital LP.
Ron Paul received $3,054 in contributions, the bulk of which came from Paul Selinger, a Merrill Lynch financial adviser.
Obama received a total of $69,416 of 68 reported donations from residents in Greenwich. Some notables who contributed the maximum of $2,500 were actor Ron Howard and his wife Cheryl; Coda Automotive; Indian Spring Land Company executive Johnathan Dubois; and Alma Rutgers, a longtime presence in Greenwichs town government.
Overall in Connecticut, for individual contributors, Romney has raised a total of $2,386,591; Paul raised $167,160; Gingrich raised $112,725; and Santorum raised $30,050. Obama has raised $1,047,466.
