Robert Curtis, Greenwich Realtor

Robert S. Curtis, a prominent Greenwich realtor, died Nov. 13 at the age of 76. Curtis took over Curtis Associates Realtors in 1950. The agency, located on Sound Beach Avenue, had been started by his mother, Evelyn. In 1967, he was named director of the Greenwich Board of Realtors, a position he held until 1984. He sold his realty firm to Coldwell Banker in 1999.

"Bob was very even-keeled, kind and fair," said Sally Parris of Coldwell Banker. "He was open-minded and treated everyone as equals. He would always do his best to help you."

Curtis served as chairman of the Greenwich Planning and Zoning Commission from 1982 to 1986, and during that time co-authored the book "Land Use Plan." He also taught real estate appraisal at Fairfield University. After he retired from the P&Z, Curtis was awarded the Bar Association Liberty Bell Award, Exchange Club's Outstanding Citizen Award and the Chamber of Commerce Government Person of the Year award.

In his spare time, Curtis enjoyed sailing and served as commodore of the Riverside Yacht Club in 1988 and 1989. His boat, Gunsmoke, was the club's flagship. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his later years he traveled across the country to pursue his love of fly-fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marge; a son, Grant Curtis; a daughter, Diane Grove; a sister, Jane C. Watts, and two grandchildren. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Memorial donations can be made to the Presbyterian Church in Old Greenwich.
