Riverside Vet, 23, Killed in Car Crash

A Riverside Marine who served two tours in Afghanistan was killed Sunday when his car hit a utility pole in Somers, N.Y. Lance Cpl. Joseph Schiano, 23, lost control of his 2003 Volkswagen Jetta on  Route 139 just after noon on Sunday. He was pronounced dead at the scene, New York state troopers said.

Schiano graduated from Greenwich High School in 2005 and attended Drexel University for one year before enlisting in the Marine Corp.

He is survived by his mother, Debra Schiano; siblings Tyler and Nicole; his grandmother, Elizabeth Chute Gerardi, and several aunts uncles and cousins.

Family and friends may call at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 23, from 3 to 8 p.m. A Mass will be held at Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church.
