FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – More people rode Metro-North New Haven Line trains in 2012 than the previous year, a new record, according to data released by the rail authority.

Ridership reached a record 38.8 million rides last year, up about 600,000 or nearly 1.5 percent from 2011’s 38.2 million. The increases were first reported by Hearst Newspapers.

The improving economy played a factor in the increase in ridership, which was not significantly affected by Hurricane Sandy in the fall, officials said. Additionally, the continued installation of new trains also contributed to the improvement.

Metro-North operates three rail lines – New Haven, Hudson and Harlem – and combined the trio carried about 83 million riders in 2012, not a record but its second highest total.

Ridership along the MTA’s Long Island Rail Road was also up in 2012, reaching 81.7 million riders, or an increase of just under 1 percent.

Metro-North hopes to build on its ridership increases by adding more trains in the spring and making improvements to its Danbury spur .
