Report: Affordable Care Act Premiums In Connecticut Fourth Highest In U.S.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Connecticut is the fourth-most expensive state in the country for state health insurance premiums under the Affordable Care Act, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in report, according to the Hartford Business Journal .

The cost of Connecticut's health insurance exchange offerings were ranked behind only Alaska, Mississippi and Wyoming, according to the report.

Access Health Connecticut CEO Kevin Counihan released a statement in response to the report.

"We have not been able to verify the figures, which indicated that Connecticut premiums rank as the fourth highest in the country," Counihan said in the statement. "Unfortunately, this is not surprising, given that Connecticut currently has the fourth highest medical costs in the U.S., underscoring how various marketplace variables impact premium rates.

"Additionally, Connecticut has a substantial number of mandated benefits when compared to other states, as well as broad provider network requirements, both of which tend to drive higher premiums. We look forward to being part of the dialogue to address these important issues moving forward as we look to make coverage more affordable in our state."

Connecticut’s exchange would cost an average of $436 a month. Only in Alaska, Mississippi and Wyoming would the average premium for a similar plan be higher. The national monthly average is $328.

Americans will be covered under policies they purchase in exchanges Jan. 1. Residents can begin to shop for a policy Tuesday, when all state exchanges are required to be up and running.
