GREENWICH, Conn. The Greenwich Post Office on Greenwich Avenue has been sold to a company affiliated with Greenwich resident and real estate powerhouse Peter L. Malkin.
According to the town tax assessors office, Greenwich Retail LLC paid $15,057,500 for the building on Aug. 15. The organization has headquarters in Malkins offices in New York City. The Malkin family controls the Empire State Building.
A "for sale" sign was posted outside the post office in September 2010. The U.S. Postal Service announced early last year plans to sell the building to downsize to a smaller space. Main branch operations will move to the former Choice Pet Supply store on Amogerone Cross Way.
The 17,000-square-foot building, erected in 1917, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Postal Service officials said in September they were looking for buyers who would preserve the building and the lobbys1939 mural depicting scenes of early American life. Any changes to the building would have to be approved by the state due to its National Register status.
Malkin could not be reached for comment.
