Officials Capture Bear in Greenwich Backyard

GREENWICH, Conn. - A bear was tranquilized and fell out of a tree in the backyard of a home on Hamilton Avenue in Greenwich Wednesday afternoon.

Officers with rifles were seen entering a wooded area behind a multi-family home at 151 Hamilton Ave . around 2:30 p.m. Neighbors were being waved away from the scene, where rustling and yelling was heard.

"It's all good now," said Capt. Mark Kordick of the Greenwich Police Department .

The bear cub weighed 70 pounds, Kordick said.

The bear may have been spotted in Rye Brook, N.Y. , Tuesday night. The first sighting occurred at 10 p.m. on Tuesday evening, when a resident driving home saw two black bears - a mother and a cub - crossing Ridge Street near the entrance ramp to the Hutchinson River Parkway, Rye Brook police Lt. Eugene Matthews said.

Moments later, police received a call from a resident in the same area reporting two bears in their backyard, Matthews said.
