FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Another 24 new rail cars have been delivered to run on the tracks of Metro-North’s New Haven Line in Connecticut, bringing the total of M8 railroad cars to 276, the MTA announced on its website.

Metro-North ordered 380 M8 rail cars from Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. in 2006 for use on the New Haven Line, which run through Fairfield County and Westchester County.

Of the total M8 cars, 256 have been accepted for service and 20 have been under inspection and testing by Kawasaki Rail Car Inc.

Metro-North’s M8 count reached 252 railroad cars in July. Earlier this year, there were 216 cars delivered as of April after the tally had reached 186 in January.

The new M8 trains represent 54 percent of total weekday service on the New Haven Line, 78.9 percent of Saturday service and 79.7 percent of Sunday service, according to the MTA.  As of April, the New Haven Line was operating more M8 cars than old equipment.

Notably, it was announced last week that the MTA and Kawasaki Rail Car have entered into a new contract for up to $1.83 billion to design and build the next generation of M9 rail cars for the Metro-North Railroad on the Hudson and Harlem lines and on the Long Island Railroad.
