Greenwich Yoga Studio Focuses on Education for 'Namaste India'

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Yoga studios from Mamaroneck to India will participate Saturday in Namaste India, a worldwide yoga benefit organized by the international literacy group Room to Read.

Globally, 100 yoga studios, including participants in China, Japan, Australia, Canada, Switzerland and France, will take part and donate all proceeds to support Room to Read's Girls' Education Program in India

Locally, Equinox, at 1053 West Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck will hold a basic yoga class for adults from noon to 1 p.m., and Westchester Yoga Arts, at 82 Centre Ave. in New Rochelle, will hold a vinyasa/hatha yoga class for adults at 12:30 p.m. Nearby, Kaia Yoga, at 328 Pemberwick Road in Greenwich, Conn. will hold a karma yoga class for adults from 2-3 p.m.

The nonprofit plans to use the money to give 150 girls a one-year scholarship for school.

"Yoga is known as an exercise that brings focus and mindfulness, so we want people to be mindful of girls' education in developing countries and how that is critical in breaking the cycle of poverty," said Karen Khor,  media relations spokesperson for Room to Read.

Room to Read has 53 volunteer chapters in 16 countries around the world and strives to raise children and communities out of poverty by increasing literacy. Its Westchester chapter launched in late 2010 and held its first major fundraising event Nov. 17. https://mamaroneck.dailyvoice.com/news/room-read-event-raises-20k-global-literacy and https://mamaroneck.dailyvoice.com/news/namaste-india-event-turns-focus-education
