Metro-North Set To Require Sleep Apnea Testing Of Engineers

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Metro-North Railroad will now require all of its engineers to undergo testing for sleep apnea, according to ABC New York.

The directive came in response to the National Transportation Safety Board revealing that engineer William Rockefeller, who was in control of the train that derailed and killed four people last year in the Bronx, N.Y., suffered from severe sleep apnea and it may have played a role in the tragedy, ABC New York reported.

According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. The chronic condition disrupts your sleep because you move often out of deep sleep and into light sleep because of the breathing difficulties.
