Many In Fairfield County Say No Saturday Mail Is Just Fine

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The Daily Voice asked you on Wednesday what you thought of the U.S. Postal Service cutting down their mail delivery to five days, and a majority of you said you didn’t mind.

The U.S. Postal Service says that it needs to cut $2 billion from their budget due to revenue decreases, and the best way to do that is to remove Saturday deliveries across the country.

The Postal Service announced Wednesday that beginning in August, the service would stop delivering mail on Saturdays, but continue package delivery, pending approval from Congress.

“The Postal Service is advancing an important new approach to delivery that reflects the strong growth of our package business and responds to the financial realities resulting from America’s changing mailing habits,” said Patrick R. Donahoe, postmaster general and chief executive officer of the USPS, in a statement. “We developed this approach by working with our customers to understand their delivery needs and by identifying creative ways to generate significant cost savings.”

According to the poll The Daily Voice posted, 44 percent of those who answered said they didn’t mind not getting mail on Saturdays.

Another 34 percent said that didn’t like not receiving mail on Saturday, but that it was better than getting a tax increase to keep the deliveries.
