Lowey Urges IRS To Exempt Tappan Zee Bridge Noise Reduction Grants

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- U.S. Rep. Nita M. Lowey, D-Westchester/Rockland, ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, has requested that Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen exempt grants for noise reduction related to the Tappan Zee Bridge construction from taxable income.

“The construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge is one of the largest infrastructure projects underway in the United States and represents a substantial improvement for the 50 million motorists who cross the bridge annually,” said Lowey in her letter to Koskinen.

“However, a construction project of this size is not without its hardships, and homeowners who reside close to the project will be negatively affected by the substantial construction noise. These residents deserve the right to the quiet enjoyment of their property.”

A program called The New NY Bridge Community Benefits Program is making $1.7 million in grants available to eligible residents of Tarrytown, South Nyack and Grandview for sound-reducing windows and doors.

“It is essential that my constituents are not penalized by the IRS for taking advantage of grant funding to mitigate the construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge,” Lowey added.
