Lines Form in Greenwich for $540M Jackpot Tickets

GREENWICH, Conn. – The multistate Mega Millions Jackpot has hit $540 million - the biggest lotto jackpot in U.S. history. Like countless others across the country, Isabella Hernandez of Greenwich was out Thursday evening buying her tickets.

“I was driving home from work, and I was listening to the radio and they said when it was $390 million. No one had been named the grand prize winner, but the runners up each won $250 million,” she said with five tickets in her hand. “I have only gambled two times in my whole life. But when I heard that I started fantasizing about what I would do with $500 million. And I thought, hey, why not? It could be me. So I decided to buy one.”

The jackpot for Friday’s drawing was originally estimated at $476 million, but a spike in nationwide sales pushed the jackpot higher. This is the largest lottery jackpot in world history, surpassing the previous record of $390 million, according to a statement on the Mega Millions website.

The Mega Millions has not had a winner since Jan. 24. The odds of winning the jackpot are one in 176 million. The drawing will be held Friday at 11 p.m.
