Lifeguards Needed At Sherwood Island State Park In Westport

SHELTON, Conn. -- The state parks are looking to hire lifeguards for this summer with positions available in Fairfield County at Sherwood Island in Westport, Indian Well in Shelton and Squantz Pond in New Fairfield.

Connecticut State Parks wants to fill 80 lifeguard positions across the state to ensure the safety of its beachgoers at State Park waterfront beaches. The state has 11 waterfront parks that require lifeguards, but only nine have available positions, according the the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection's Facebook page. 

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and receive American Red Cross certification in Waterfront Lifeguarding. 

Connecticut lifeguards patrol both shoreline and inland beaches. "The State Parks Lifeguard Squad provides surveillance of designated swimming areas, administers first aid and performs beach-related maintenance work and other park tasks as needed." 

Lifeguards' duties include: monitoring designated areas to assist swimmers; attempting to prevent accidents; maintaining order and safety; rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning; administering first aid and/or CPR as required; participating in physical and rescue skills training; and performing other tasks as required. 

Positions are also available at the following locations: 

  • Black Rock State Park, Watertown 
  • Burr Pond State Park, Torrington 
  • Hammonasset Beach State Park, Madison
  • Indian Well State Park, Shelton
  • Rocky Neck State Park, East Lyme 
  • Squantz Pond State Park, New Fairfield
  • Silver Sands State Park, Milford 
  • Sherwood Island State Park, Westport 
  • Wadsworth Falls State Park, Middletown
