Community groups are up in arms over fees the Byram Shubert Library charges them for after hours meetings.
The library has started to require groups to pay $39.60 an hour for a staff member to be present and close the building. Carol Mahoney, director of the Greenwich Library, said the library recently underwent extensive renovations and the fee is a way to protect the community's investment.
"We only require the fee when the building has to be opened after library hours," said Mahoney. The library is under contract to pay a custodian to be present past closing time, she said. There is a three-hour minimum for the after hours fee.
The Byram Association, one of the groups protesting the fees, declined to comment when contacted by TheDailyGreenwich.
Mahoney noted that the library branch has been very accommodating to local groups. "If a meeting goes past the library's closing time, the staff has been very willing to stay the extra time with no charge."
The Byram Shubert Library is open Mon., Wed. and Fri. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tues. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thurs. from noon to 8 p.m.
