GREENWICH, Conn. -- Jane Hoffman of Greenwich died Sunday following a stroke. She was 89 years old.
Hoffman was born in New York City on Jan. 21, 1922. Her family moved to Baldwin, L.I., after her birth. During her school days, Hoffman won medals in swimming competitions. She graduated from Columbia University Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, following in her mothers footsteps.
During a blackout in 1942, Hoffman met her husband to be, Brooks Hoffman, a medical student, and the two were married in 1945.
In Greenwich, Hoffman was a member of Christ Church, where she served on the Altar Guild. She helped raise money for the Community Chest and for the American Red Cross. She was a member of the Round Hill Club, and loved playing golf and fly-fishing.
A scholarship at Columbia University School of Nursing was established in her name, and each year the recipient came to see Jane at her home.
Hoffman is survived by her husband; three daughters and two sons and all of their spouses, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
A service will be held in Christ Church in Greenwich at 11 a.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jane Helwig Hoffman Scholarship at Columbia University School of Nursing, 630 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10652.
