Local resident Stephanie Kies sang the "Star Spangled Banner," and several officials involved with the project, including First Selectman Peter J. Tesei, made remarks.

"The end result is outstanding," Tesei told the Daily Voice. "We have 9 acres that have been adaptively used to provide enjoyment for people who are into passive recreation, active recreation, lovers of nature. ...

"It's been a decade in the process - in terms of formulating the plan, getting various community groups to buy in, approval from all the regulatory authorities, funding. In many ways, it's illustrative of how things in the Greenwich government work - it takes a long time, but the end result is extremely well worth it. It's a location that will bring together many different generations, and it will be a real legacy we leave to future generations - a great place to come enjoy themselves and enjoy the outdoors."

Max Avery, of Greenwich, was at the new park Thursday with his wife and son, and liked what he saw.

"It's so great that the land was re-used," Avery said. "From what it used to be to what it is today... is amazing. Having it be by the water is a nice, inspiring, atmosphere - good for the kids, and the field is huge, like a professional field. Lots of parking... I'm impressed."

Five-year-old Mason Avery had the entire playground area to himself, and was having a blast. "I like how it has such cool things," Mason told the Daily Voice. "I've never seen a standing teeter-totter."

The park is the former site of the Cos Cob Power Plant. It includes a playground, sports fields, a waterfront pavilion and a coastal walkway.

It is the future home of the town's Sept. 11 Memorial.
