Hurricane Sandy Disrupts Greenwich Cell Service

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy has disrupted travel, work, school and power, but Fairfield County residents may have also experienced difficulty with their cellphone reception.

Two major wireless carriers, Verizon and AT&T, reported that Hurricane Sandy knocked out parts of their wireless service up and down the East Coast, particularly in New York City and New Jersey.

“Our network teams continue round-the-clock restoration efforts for the sites that remain offline due to lack of connectivity or power,” a Verizon statement said. “We appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to restore 100 percent of our network.”

Steven Hodges, the Northeast regional president of AT&T Mobility, said, “In advance of the storm, AT&T staged emergency response equipment in strategic locations to help combat disruptions in service and ensure a fast recovery. While these efforts have helped us restore service to the vast majority of our cell sites in the Northeast, we are still working through some issues in the most heavily impacted areas."

Both services have waived late fees, extended the late-payment window and won’t disconnect service because of late payments.

The company also is offering free charging stations at all of its stores in Fairfield County.
