Guiding Eyes is hosting its fifth annual Wine, Music and Puppies from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5 at its Yorktown headquarters, 611 Granite Springs Road.

The event will feature Amy Dixon, a sommelier and Greenwich resident, and musician Blessing Offor, both graduates of Guiding Eyes.

Dixon and Offor will lead guests in a paired musical performance and guided wine tasting. The event will feature Italian wines from the Piedmont and Umbria regions. The wines are presented courtesy of Zachys in Scarsdale.

Dixon is studying to be a Master of Wine, one of only 212 in the world, only a dozen of whom are women. She travels with her guide dog Elvis and also is a Paralympic triathlete.

“My guide dog has opened many doors for me that I couldn’t have passed through otherwise, both literally and figuratively,” Dixon said. “Guiding Eyes gave me my life back. Having Elvis enables me to travel around the world. This is a way to give back to Guiding Eyes."

Dixon said she enjoys getting to meet people from all over Westchester and tell them how Elvis changed her life.

"It is so much easier to get around an airport," Dixon said. "I couldn't even buy a cup of coffee and walk, now I can walk with a cup of coffee through a busy airport or without tripping over luggage. It's things you take for granted."

Dixon said having a dog allows her to be independent and live the lifestyle she had before her blindness.

"He is a great companion," Dixon said. "I've had 16 eye surgeries over the last four and a half years. Elvis has been with me every step of the way. If I had a cane instead of a dog, I don't think I could've gotten through it."

Being blind has not impacted Dixon's sommelier profession.

"It's given me a different perspective," Dixon said. "I focus on my nose and palette. I have a whole layer of information that a sighted person doesn't have."
