Greenwich's Population Continues To Grow, U.S. Census Says

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich's population grew by a little less than 1,000 people from 2010 to 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, a sign that people continue to find the city an attractive place to live.

The town's population grew from 61,307 in 2010 to 62,256 in 2012, which is a growth rate of 1.55 percent.

Greenwich's population increase was slightly below the growth rate of Fairfield County as a whole, at 1.63 percent, over the same time period. The overall growth for the county was from 918,814 to 933,835 for a difference of 15,021, according to the Census bureau.

“We are on a strong course,” said Lisa Mercurio of the Business Council of Fairfield County, referring to the whole county. “You don’t want to see people moving from the region.”

Mercurio, who works as the director of Fairfield County Information Exchange for the business council and tracks population information, added that the county’s population increase is in line with where it has been, and where a UConn database projects the population to be by 2025.

According to the database, the population will increase anywhere from about 1 percent to 8 percent depending on the fertility level.
