The summit is part of the Global Citizens Initiative, which was founded by Greenwich resident Yumi Kuwana.
The summit, emphasizes a “Glocal approach” to problem solving: "Think Global, Act Local." The purpose of the projects are to engage students in an array of complex global challenges, according to a press release.
Hosted at the Harvard Faculty Club, in Cambridge, Mass., the 24 students, ages 16-19, were recruited from Afghanistan, India, China, Rwanda, Nigeria, France, Japan and the United States.
Currently, the broad topics under which the projects fall include: environmental sustainability, poverty, and education. During the summit, teams of students will come up with an idea and framework for the project. Each student will then decide how to address the needs of their specific community through the project, according to a press release.
In order to help students design feasible solutions to their challenges, they are paired with mentors who will provide guidance and support from such institutions as the Boston Consulting Group, Seventh Generation, McKinsey & Co., Kyorin University, Liner Law, Harvard Business School and Cook Pine Capital, according to a press release.
After the summit, mentors will guide the students on implementation of the service project in the student’s home community, according to a press release.
"Global Citizens Initiative is most appreciative of our mentors, located around the world, for their dedication and commitment to support our young, high\-caliber scholars as they become GCI Ambassadors at the completion of the eight-day program,” said Kuwana in a press release. “We believe our scholars will also be able to provide inspiration and insights to mentors and make their interaction a mutual beneficial experience.”
