Greenwich Powerball Winners To Give to Charity

GREENWICH, Conn. — A trio of Greenwich financial executives who won $254.2 million in the state’s largest Powerball jackpot ever will give much of the money to charity, an attorney for the winners said.

“I don’t feel that these people need to win the lottery or deserve to win the lottery," Nicholas Naviell, a Greenwich Avenue Starbucks patron, said Monday night. "But I hope they give it to someone who can actually use it.”

After taxes, the men will take home nearly $104 million. The jackpot is the largest ever in the state and the 12th biggest in the history of Powerball.

“We haven’t really thought about what the use of the money is going to be,” attorney Jason Kurland said in a video shot during Monday’s news conference in Rocky Hill by The Associated Press and placed on The Washington Post's website. “One thing we do know is a significant amount will be going to Connecticut charities.” The men will all continue to work in wealth management, he said.

Gregg Skidmore, Brandon Lacoff and Tim Davidson of Bell Asset Management, a Greenwich-based wealth management company, revealed their win 27 days after the drawing, according to this article in Greenwich Time. They work together as asset managers at the firm on Putnam Avenue in Greenwich.

The jackpot was announced Nov. 2, but the men did not reveal themselves as the trustees for Putnam Avenue Family Trust, created to handle the money, until late Monday morning.

“They thought they were the winners, and then that night, I think one of the local TV stations had the numbers and the Powerball numbers were wrong on the TV screen and that put them into a little bit of a tizzy,” said Kurland. “But the news, to their credit, corrected it two hours later, and they were confident that they had it.”

A Greenwich resident and former financial professional, who preferred to remain anonymous, said, “How fitting in a town of 65,000 people, with six or seven billionaires and a ton of other financial professionals, for this kind of win.”

A BP gas station in Stamford sold the winning ticket and will collect $100,000. The winning numbers were 12-14-34-39-46 with the Powerball 36.

Kris Duke, another Starbucks patron who works in Connecticut, said, “It’s not that I think anyone deserves, or doesn’t deserve to win the lottery, but in this economy it’s frustrating.”
