GREENWICH, Conn. Greenwich may get a ban on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers but just for the month of August.
This is an issue we have collectively spent hours listening, and todays vote is certainly not going to satisfy everyone. And its not going to end this debate, Selectman Drew Marzullo said at the Board of Selectmens meeting Thursday morning.
The Greenwich Board of Health last week rejected the selectmens proposal to amend the towns noise ordinance. In response, the selectmen gave their endorsement to try the one-month ban this year. The selectmen rejected proposed ideas of an April to October ban as well as a Sunday ban.
Marzullo recommended the town take it slow and evaluate how the ban works. I know what were going to hear is August people are on vacation, and we didnt go far enough, he said. I know the other side of it. I think its the beginning of something to make it better.
After the towns legal department drafts a proposal, it could make the Representative Town Meetings agenda for its June meeting, First Selectman Peter Tesei said.
Tesei said the Board of Health could possibly take up two of the four proposals originally outlined by Marzullo at its March 21 meeting. One of the proposals is to fine residents on a sliding scale for violations. A first offense would warrant a warning and education; a second offense would result in a $100 fine; and three or more offenses would be a fine of $249.
The health board may also take up a proposal examining the legality of fining homeowners, rather than landscape companies, for leaf blower ordinance violation.
