GREENWICH, Conn. A Greenwich man was arrested on multiple robbery and assault charges after a series of midmorning robberies were reported at separate convenience stores in Byram.
Edward Royster, 33, of 4 Armonk St., walked into a local convenience store in Byram and asked patrons for money, police said. When refused, he grabbed a scratch-off lotto ticket from a customer and reached over the counter to try to steal more scratch-off lotto tickets. Royster hit a telephone out of a store clerks hand as he tried to call 911.
Royster then left the store and walked into another convenience store. He grabbed a $20 bill from a patron before stealing a pack of cigarettes from the store, police said.
Officers located a robbery victim near Mill Street and South Water Street on Thursday morning who pointed out Royster. When officers approached, he attempted to punch an officer and resisted arrest before trying to escape.
With the help of a Good Samaritan, the officer arrested Royster, who was charged with robbery, assault on a police officer, interfering with a 911 call, interfering with police and larceny. He was held on $250,000 bond and is due in court July 28. The officer sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.
