Greenwich Hospital's Doctor Colletti Discusses Palliative Care Program

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Dr. Donna Colletti, medical director of the palliative care program at Greenwich Hospital, joined Tony Savino on his segment "Spotlight on Medicine" to discuss the program recently on WGCH Radio.

Colletti currently practices palliative care and is the medical director of the program at Greenwich Hospital that began a year and a half ago. Additionally, Colletti practiced obstetrics and gynecology 16 years and 13 of them were at Greenwich Hospital.

Colletti describes palliative care as a sub-specialty of medicine that focuses on prevention and relief of suffering, tries to focus on comfort of individual and assisting the family with a patient of a severe illness.

Patients who enter palliative care face life-threatening illnesses and often need to take advanced measures to help with illness.

"Whenever you're around end of life issues you want to make sure people don't feel like there's an agenda there that you're not trying to treat them or provide care because that's not what this is about."

"Its the exact opposite, we're trying to serve peoples needs and to explain and dissolve misconceptions."

"We want our patients and families to understand that we only want patients to undergo this type of treatment in hopes that it will make them better and not prolong  their suffering."

Conversations generally last about an hour, with discussions from families about unresolved issues, death, and end-of-life conflicts.

To be a part of the palliative care program, patients need a referral from their primary care physician. Physicians can call 203-863-4622 to refer patients.
