Greenwich Drowning Victim's Names Released

The grandmother and toddler who drowned Thursday in a manmade koi pond in Greenwich have been identified as Anna Furano, 67, of 12 Fox's Lane, and her grandson, Massimo Furano, 2, of 35 Harold Ave., Greenwich.

Police said the grandmother and her husband, Carmine, were babysitting their grandson at their Fox's Lane home Thursday morning and that Carmine left the residence at 9 a.m. and returned at 10:30 a.m. to find his wife and grandson unresponsive in their koi pond.

At 10:54 a.m., police received a 911 call and dispatched officers. Members of Greenwich Emergency Medical Services transported the woman and child to Greenwich Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The police are continuing to investigate the incident and are awaiting results of an autopsy, scheduled for Saturday.

They said that thus far the investigation shows nothing to indicate the drowning was anything other than a tragic accident. Police said the pond is enclosed by a low stonewall and fence measuring about 2 1/2 feet high.
