GREENWICH, Conn. – Drivers in Greenwich's Riverside neighborhood will have to detour around the Lockwood Lane bridge that spans I-95 when it closes for a construction project on April 1.

The $3 million project will replace the entire bridge. The project is expected to be completed by November with the road scheduled to re-open on Nov. 30.

Preliminary work on the bridge began on Monday.

The project will affect routes to Eastern Middle School and Riverside School. Students who walk to school over that bridge are advised to make alternate arrangements.

Project engineer Mary Baker said at Thursday's Board of Selectmen meeting that arrangements have been made to limit the noise of the project. The noisiest work will be limited to one week in July when the bridge and its substructure will be demolished.

Noise monitors will be in the neighborhood to make sure town and state standards are met, Baker said.

See our map above to start planning your detour.

Good question. I-95 will likely have to be slightly narrowed by Jersey barriers at the point of the bridge, but traffic should not be drastically affected. There are no plans to divert traffic off of I-95 at any time during this project, according to the state's plans. Just plan to locally detour around Lockwood Lane if you usually travel over that bridge.

How will this affect I95 in July, when many of us drive "under" that Bridge in order to get to Exit 5, Stamford exits and beyond? Will traffic be diverted for local as well as interstate driving during the demolition of the bridge in July??????
