Gas Prices Still Accelerating In Connecticut, Nation

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Gas prices in Connecticut are up with the approaching Labor Day weekend and many planning to take to the roads for a last summer vacation fling. But they're still lower than they were at this time in 2015, according to an AAA survey.

Although gas prices are up in Connecticut they're still down from this time last year, according to an AAA survey.

Today, the Nutmeg State gas average price is $2.30 per gallon representing a four-cent increase from this time last week, said the survey.

Nationally, the average price of a gallon of gas is also up, by six cents from today's $2.22 average over last week's $2.16, said the report.

In both cases, however, average prices are still significantly lower than this time last year.

Connecticut’s price is 32 cents lower and the national average 27 cents lower compared to this time in 2015.

Connecticut continues to hold the 15th spot on the list of states with the highest gas prices, AAA said.

Among the factors driving prices higher are higher crude oil prices; Gulf Coast refinery issues; the threat of a potential hurricane moving into the Gulf of Mexico and speculation about OPECs plans to limit production and the U.S. Federal Reserve’s plans to raise interest rates, the report suggests.

The report looked at the different regions in Connecticut.

These are the average gas prices in Connecticut on Monday:

  • Greater Bridgeport/Stamford $2.37
  • New Haven/Meriden $2.28
  • Greater Hartford $2.28
  • New London/Norwich $2.29
  • Statewide Average: $2.30

Connecticut's prices are sharply lower than the highest averages in the country, Hawaii and California at $2.74 and $2.68, respectively. South Carolina came in as having the lowest average price, just $1.95, followed by Alabama at $1.98.
